Health Benefits of Hemp

HFirst of all you can not get high from hemp. Even though hemp and marijuana are both made from the Cannabis plant, hemp seeds contains less than  a trace of THC which is the psychoactive substance in marijuana.

What hemp does have is a complete source of protein, which means that they provide all the essential amino acids. Complete protein sources are very rare in the plant kingdom. Quinoa is the only other example of a complete, plant-based protein I can think of. Hemp seeds are also rich in healthy fats. They have a 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3  along with good amounts of vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium,  magnesium,  calcium, iron and zinc.

Whole hemp seeds are high in fiber, both soluble and insoluble. This is great stuff for your digestive health. I made the mistake of buying shelled hemp seeds. They have less than 1g of fiber, but all the other good stuff.

Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance in the gut. It is a valuable source of nutrients for the beneficial digestive bacteria, and may also reduce spikes in blood sugar and regulate cholesterol levels.

Insoluble fiber adds bulk to fecal matter and may help food and waste pass through the gut. Consuming insoluble fiber has also been linked with a reduced risk of diabetes.

This week I will be adding three tbs of hemp seeds to one of my smoothies every day.

I threw it all in my Ninja for about 40 seconds. I like the bites of graped you can see in the smoothie.

E for Eating Habits – Good, Bad & Ugly

We use to know our food – we grew it, we gathered it or we stalked it. I remember my parent’s huge garden. We would eat corn and green beans right off the plant. It was so good.
Now-a-days it seems my family has become separated from the source of our life.

But eating is also the heart of our culture – we use it to celebrate, socialize and grieve. Joy, comfort and grief are wrapped up in our food.
When we are not sure what to do we will reach out with food. It’s no wonder we can develop an unhealthy relationship with the source of our health.
My goal is to become a more conscious eater.

Fast food and eating in the car is just about as ugly as it gets. I would put a picture, but I don’t want any evidence that I have ever done that.

D is for Dancing with Delight!

I love dancing but tend to hide keep it to myself.
When my kids where small we would clear the living room and have dance offs.
This is what happens when you let your babies dance. 44 seconds of pure joy.
My hope is for this 17 year old to face all of life with openness and the willingness to be yourself in the mist of a crowd. Keep Dancing Everyone!!!

Dancing is good for your physical and mental health. Do you dance whenever the mood strikes or when no one is looking? Maybe you don’t dance at all.

Is seems we are always in a rush. Get the kids to school, get to work, get the kids to practice, get the groceries, get dinner because you don’t have time to cook the groceries you bought, find time for your husband, your kids and oh yeah don’t forget to take care of yourself. How can you feed your creativity in this busy crazy life. I’m so blessed and love my full life but this year I have to find some balance. How do you balance all the demands with the inner peace?
