Favorite Fair Foods?

In April, I started with The Highlands Games, moved to King Williams Art and Craft Fair during Fiesta in San Antonio and visited the July Jubilee in Leakey Texas during well, July. Watching parades, walking through the booths of arts and craft, listening to local musicians all happens around the food. Smells of grilled burgers, fried bread and cotton candy. Since the beginning of humanity celebrations and festivals have always includes food venders.St. Raymond Catholic Church

Food on a stick is believed to be one of the first tools used by humans! No matter how far we evolve some things never change. For hundreds of years we have put candied fruit on a stick. Credit for the fall favorite, candied apple on a stick goes to New Jersey.

The Texas State fair claims credit for the invention of the corn dog in the early 1940s, but The Minnesota State Fair says it is theirs.

Either way it opened the flood gates to food on a stick.

Teddy Roosevelt’s quote, “Speak softly and carry a big stick…” comes to mind but I’m pretty sure he didn’t foresee the power of the stick when it came to carnival food. The stick became a perfect design for food vendors at every county and state fair. All the better if dipped in a fry bucket deep with hot grease.
Some of my favorites are served on greasy paper plates.

Wrapping your food of choice in a tortilla might be a Texas thing but it does the trick when it comes to walking and eating. German taco anyone? The strangest tortilla wrapped treat might be the crawsaugaes I saw at the July Jubilee in Leakey.

My all time favorite is green apple snow cones.

Would the REAL Barbie step foward?

Should Barbie look like a real 19 year old girl?

Would the REAL Barbie step foward?

Do you believe we have sub-conscious expectations created by our culture? I find this post about measurements of real women interesting. Has Barbie set an unrealistic body image for American girls only to have it reinforced in print and movies? I do have to admit I loved my Barbies and Kens. I had the town house, the Hawaiian Hut, an airplane, horses, more clothes than one doll needed and of course Barbie’s purple corvette. I always did wonder why Ken didn’t have his own car. I guess we know who was in charge. Barbie might be a physical anomaly but she’s never short of girl power.

Oblivion: Do you follow the rules or question them?

Are you a person that is in awe of the miracle of life or do you glare at the world with a suspicious squint?
Surprise! Date night with my Mr. D & H to Boerne’s new Starplex! http://www.starplexcinemas.com/ Little Boerne, Texas is moving up in the world. Of course after 26 years as a couple and four kids I’m easy to impress.

We went to the movie Oblivion, with Tom Cruise. I love thrillers, love stories and si-fi so I was excited about this one. I have to say Tom Cruise is a master of his craft. We won’t spend time talking about his personal life, because when he is on the screen he becomes that character.

Where there plot holes? Yeah, but the character and story kept me engaged to the point I over looked any inconstancies. The visuals alone in this movie are worth seeing. Talk about big set pieces.

The overall message I left with? Hope. I’m amazed by the resilience of the human race to live and find beauty in the world around us, even if that world has been destroyed. Books, art and music are at the very core of who we are as people, creative beings that look at the world in wonder. The profound emotions when your team wins in a no-win last minute play. The glory when the underdog triumphs. Love so deep you would sacrifice everything you know to stand against what you thought was true.

Do you question rules and reasons or do you play it safe? Jack, the hero, carefully transplants a flower he finds and waters it. When he brings it up to surprise his partner, she throws it out the window. It could be contaminated and it is against policy to bring anything from Earth’s surface into the house.

Do you follow the rules to keep everyone you love safe or question what they tell you is truth? Go see the movie and decide who you identify with the most.

Dove: Real Beauty or Scripted?

This video released by Dove has gotten a great deal of traffic.  The first time I saw it I wanted to cry. Why do women have a hard time seeing past their internal insecurities?  Yes, you are beautiful just as you are, flaws and all.

I watched it again…One woman said it would change the wayshe treated other people including her children. Why would she treat her children different just because someone else thought she was beautiful?  That statement confused me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttESvtgiJPk&feature=player_embedded

Is Dove still focused on the external? These women were all attractive and slender.   We get that women have a tendency to not appreciate our own beauty.  What about women that don’t live up to the accepted standard of beauty.  Either because of age or weight or maybe awkward features, these women should be celebrated too.  So what do you think, social changing campaign or  really slick advertising that makes us want to rush out and buy Dove so we to can feel pretty too?

You are beatiful so turn up the music and dance!

Thanks for stopping by, if you like the post let me know. I would love for you to follow me  along on this crazy  journey of life.

Is seems we are always in a rush. Get the kids to school, get to work, get the kids to practice, get the groceries, get dinner because you don’t have time to cook the groceries you bought, find time for your husband, your kids and oh yeah don’t forget to take care of yourself. How can you feed your creativity in this busy crazy life. I’m so blessed and love my full life but this year I have to find some balance. How do you balance all the demands with the inner peace?

Come on peace, I don’t don’t all day.
